พันธุกรรม (Heredity) หมายถึง สิ่งที่เป็นลักษณะต่างๆของสิ่งมีชีวิตที่ได้รับการถ่ายทอดมาจากสิ่งมีชีวิตรุ่นก่อนหน้าโดยสามารถถ่ายทอดส่งต่อจากรุ่นหนึ่งไปสู่อีกรุ่นหนึ่งได้ หรือ พันธุกรรม(Heredity) คือ เป็นการถ่ายทอดลักษณะต่างๆ ของสิ่งมีชีวิตจากรุ่นหนึ่งไปสู่อีกรุ่นหนึ่ง(รุ่นลูกรุ่นหลาน)ได้ เช่น คนรุ่นพ่อแม่สามารถถ่ายทอดลักษณะต่างๆลงไปยังสู่รุ่นลูกรุ่นหลานของตนได้ โดยลักษณะที่ถูกถ่ายทอดแบ่งเป็นประเภทหลักๆได้ 2 ลักษณะ คือ ลักษณะเชิงคุณภาพ และ ลักษณะเชิงปริมาณ โดยได้มีการเริ่มต้นทำการศึกษาเรื่องของพันธุกรรม(Heredity)ในช่วงกลางของศตวรรษที่ 18 โดย เกรเกอร์ เมนเดล (Gregor Mendel) ซึ่งเป็นผู้ที่ได้ค้นพบและได้อธิบายหลักของการถ่ายทอดลักษณะทางพันธุกรรม(Heredity) พันธุกรรม(Heredity)อาจสามารถเรียกอีกอย่างหนึ่งได้ว่า กรรมพันธุ์ พันธุกรรม(Heredity) เป็นสิ่งที่ทำให้คนเรามีลักษณะต่างๆที่แตกต่างกันไปมากมาย โดยมีหน่วยควบคุมที่คอยควบคุมลักษณะต่างๆเหล่านี้ ที่เรียกว่า ยีน(Gene) โดยยีน(Gene)นี้จะมีอยู่เป็นจำนวนมากภายในเซลล์แทบทุกเซลล์ ซึ่งยีน(Gene) แต่ละยีน(Gene)ก็จะมีหน้าที่คอยควบคุมลักษณะทางพันธุกรรม(Heredity)ลักษณะหนึ่งๆไป โดยจะมีทั้งยีน(Gene)ที่ควบคุมลักษณะเด่น และยีน(Gene)ที่ควบคุมลักษณะด้อย แต่ส่วนหนึ่งที่ทำให้ลักษณะเราแตกต่างออกไปนอกเหนือพันธุกรรม(Heredity) คือสิ่งแวดล้อม หรือ สภาพแวดล้อม เช่น ความอ้วน อาจเกิดจากสภาพแวดล้อมมากกว่าพันธุกรรม(Heredity) พันธุกรรม
